Remember your site is for your clients, not for Google

QuickHit1 Remember your site is for your clients, not for GoogleHi All – this is what I’m calling a “Quick Hit”. These are going to appear more regularly than the weekly main articles and will be simple hints and tips that can be followed up quickly.

One thing that we see a lot of when browsing the internet is an overly keen use of keywords in the text of the site. I’ve noticed this seems to be happening a lot on wedding photography sites that I visit.

The rule of thumb should be to build the text on your website for your target audience.

For example, I see a lot of text on site similar to: “We are wedding photographers in Scotland, who also cover wedding photography in Northern England. We can also photograph weddings in Ireland and we take reportage wedding photographs in Wales too”.

This really isn’t good practice and Google and the other search engines will pick up on this in your site and potentially penalise you.

Yes, its important to keyword correctly, but always think about your target audience and the keywording will come naturally. The above sentence would be nonsensical to a potential bride, and it is the bride you need to selling your services too – not Google.

I will be covering keywording in greater detail in the future

Comments as always appreciated and please, if you want to add to the discussion or feel what I have said is not correct then just pop it in the comments. The site is aimed at helping us all so every opinion counts.

Good advice. Write great content for your clients and the keywords will come naturally.

Another pet hate is a small font list of keywords at the bottom of every page.

I have to admit, on my last site i did put in a section at the bottom which i hated being there. So with Kevins help i redid my site aiming it totaly at the customer writing all sections for the customer, and i was suprised at how many keywords you get in when doing it that way, the site makes sense and there is no stupid little sections of crap which are off putting.
