Understanding the extensions (.co.uk & .com)

You know when you use Google – have you ever noticed the radio buttons beneath the main search that says “search:  the web | pages from the UK”?

Well, research suggests, around 1 in 3 people (in the UK) select the “pages from the UK” option.

Have you tried? – make sure your site appears under both result sets:

Google Search One Understanding the extensions (.co.uk & .com)

Google Search Two Understanding the extensions (.co.uk & .com)

As a rule of thumb, .com sites will NOTappear under the options for UK only results.  This is somewhat fuzzy and there are certain parameters to the logic that Google implements here.  For example, if your domain is a .com AND physically resides on a server in the UK then it will return in the results.

I’ve also noticed that certain .com sites with a very good pedigree will appear in the UK only results too.

So – take a look – and check your domain is returned by 1 in 3 people in the UK.

If you find your site is not appearing in the UK only search results, you can influence google a little by setting up a Google Webmaster Account and telling Google that the country the site is targeting.
